Brian Swann, DDS, MPH, Chief of Dental Services, is a renowned clinician who oversees all aspects of CHA’s dental services – patient care, clinical quality, and the Harvard-affiliated General Practice Dental Residency.
Dr. Swann earned his dental degree at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry and over the course of his lengthy career has held clinical and management positions in both private practice and the public sector. The latter includes serving as Dental Examiner for the State of California and as Dental Director of both the Sierra-Nevada and San Jose Job Corps. He was also a co-founder of the Greater Bay Area Dental Society, based in San Francisco and received the UCSF highest alumni recognition, the Medal of Honor.
After moving to the Boston region, Dr. Swann earned a Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he received the Albert Schweitzer Award for Humanitarianism. He later completed Harvard fellowships in Oral Epidemiology and Minority Health Policy. He currently holds the position of Clinical Instructor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Since joining CHA in 2008, Dr. Swann has continued his passion for dental care and community health improvement, particularly for multicultural populations. His other activities in this area include serving as a Clinician at the Mattapan Community Health Clinic, as Chair of the National and International Relations Committee of the National Dental Association and organizing the first joint African Tour between the American Dental Association and the National Dental Association in Kenya, Zanzibar, and Ethiopia.
Most recently, Dr. Swann lectured at the University of West Indies, School of Dentistry on oral public health. He has also been asked to create an emergency preparedness course in collaboration with the University Of Haiti School Of Dentistry, HSDM, the National Dental Association, and the City of Cambridge Peace Commission and to assist with developing an oral health course for the Schools of Nursing at the University of Haiti and the University of Notre Dame.
